Why I'm Not Looking Too Far Ahead In 2018

Well here we are, January 1st 2018!! Happy New Year Everybody!

I hope you've had a lovely festive break however you chose to spend it. Mine was spent with (in no particular order) family, food and ahem my fiancé. I'm still getting used to saying fiancé, but what a lovely adjustment to be making. (I did NOT take my ring off to wash the pots and forget all about it the other evening. and yes I 'wash the pots' - hands that do dishes can be soft as your face. Think on.)

I love New Year for the way it naturally makes you feel all reflective, plus it's the perfect time to start planning for the year ahead and all that you'd like to achieve during it. I love a New Year's resolution but, like many others, come one week into January they're usually gone with the wind. Surpassed by thoughts of summer holidays and lighter nights that are on their way.

That's why this year I'm only attempting one resolution.

Don't look too far ahead...

Here's why.

I recently read on Instagram "Remember when you used to dream about what you have today" and it got me thinking.

We are a lucky generation. We're allowed to dream, and to dream big. In fact we're encouraged to do so. Live the life you love and don't settle for less, is the ideal that we're all drip fed.

'Is your job making you miserable? Then tell your boss to shove it!' is more or less the ethos of today.

'Think you could do more than photocopy? Then pull the plug out at the wall and scream to your colleagues you're off for a cocktail.'

Wouldn't that be lovely! I love the promise of possibility. A life where all your wildest dreams come true sounds tip top to me. But, what if we are spending too much of our time looking forward? How many of us will ever get paid to travel the world or end up front row at New York fashion week next season?

Does it really matter anyway?

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that we shouldn't aim big. There's nothing quite like a goal to keep us on the straight and narrow and stop that oh so horrid feeling of being lost. But, what if our starry eyed goals for the year ahead are making us miss the important stuff? What if our dreams are already coming true and we haven't noticed?

My challenge for you, if you choose to accept it, is to think of one thing that you used to dream about that you have, today! Struggling? Why not ask a good pal to help? My bet is that you're not doing so badly after all.

So, for 2018 I'm not going to look too far ahead. From my experience the most wonderful things in your life are never planned for anyway. I'm going to turn up for work and leave the photocopier plugged in.

What's meant to be will always find a way.

Thank you for reading and Happy New Year!

Love Elaine x

p.s Forgive the inspirational quote overload in this post. If you can't get away with a motivational quote on January 1st then when can you?

p.p.s Also forgive the photos of me wandering nonchalantly in the great outdoors. Here's hoping T.Bird with an air of Heathcliff is a strong look in 2018.
