Vogue 100: A Century Of Style

Postcard Images from Vogue 100 A Century Of Style Exhibition

"When I first moved to New York and I was totally broke, sometimes I bought Vogue instead of dinner. I just felt it fed me more." Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City

There's something about Vogue that's good for your soul. Putting yourself in a room with 101 issues of Vogue and 280 images from the Vogue archive, is even better for you.

Previously held at the National Portrait Gallery, the Manchester Art Gallery is now host to the Vogue 100: A Century Of Style Exhibition, celebrating 100 years of one of the most influential fashion magazines in the world.

If you needed me last Friday you'd have found me en-route to Manchester. Solo day tripping, I was happy and hell bent on spending precious time staring at stylish images of beautiful people. Ahhhhh Vogue.

There's something quite lovely about visiting an exhibition alone. It's peaceful and inspiring.

The collection of iconic images displayed tells the story of the leading fashion magazine over the past ten decades. With images by world renowned photographers such as David Bailey and Mario Testino, standing alone, immersed in Vogue, was a cracking way to spend a morning.

It was disappointing that photography wasn't allowed inside the exhibition, although in the midst of a Vogue fuelled high I convinced my guilty conscience that probably, if you take a photo really quick it's almost definitely allowed.

I nailed my first attempt, (by the time any CCTV footage surfaced I'd be home and dry) but failed miserably at my second attempt. Cue to throw in your best "ahh so that's what 'no photos are allowed in this exhibition' means."

I can confirm that a) taking photos, even really quickly, is not allowed ... and b) being politely reminded of the rules at 32 is embarrassing.

Originally I planned to include my forbidden photos in this post, with words to the effect of 'If I'm going down you're going down with me.'

But then I had second thoughts.

I'd committed a crime against Vogue, wasn't I ashamed enough already?? Did I really want to lower the tone during a "major exhibition celebrating 100 years of cutting edge fashion, beauty and portrait photography by British Vogue"? (The Manchester Art Gallery)

I have therefore concluded that the forbidden photos shall not be included in this post. They shall remain hidden in a secret location which may or may not be my laptop photos folder.

Vogue junkies, please satisfy your needs instead with a few of my favourite postcards that share some of the images used over the past 100 years by the mother of all fashion magazines. I like to flick through the postcards now and again...it's good for my soul.

The exhibition runs until the 30th October 2016. If you're not already sold by the prospect of 280 Vogue images, maybe the free entry will seal the deal. The gallery does suggest a donation of £3.00 and unless you have more will power than me, the gift shop might cost you. I need 40 Vogue postcards ok!
