Escaping Reality At Hotel Gotham, Manchester

I'm writing this still on a high after spending the most amazing night at Manchester's Hotel Gotham. (If you want, for effect, feel free to picture me hunched over a type writer in a smoke filled room. I'm not, but it's more fun that way)

I've walked down King Street many times before, so how I've never noticed the hotel impressively jutting into the sky is beyond me. Formerly home to The Midland Bank, the listed building is now a stylishly opulent city centre sanctuary, based on the fictional city of Gotham.

When we made our reservation online, something about the optional 'Butler Martini Service' told me I was going to love this place. I packed something nice to wear, asked my boyfriend if I could call him Bruce Wayne and checked in.

The hotel's lavish and quirky interior is styled beautifully, with dark wood and leather, and faux fur covers on the king-size beds. The Gotham theme runs throughout the hotel and although it's fun, it's in no way tacky or for Batman enthusiasts only. It's decadent and rich. Something special and definitely different.

A complimentary drink on arrival was a lovely little touch as we made dinner reservations for the Honey Restaurant later that evening. A little tip from yours truly...book to be dining as the sun sets and make the most of the amazing city views as the light outside starts to fade.

I oohed and ahhed at the decor as we dropped our bags into our room for the night. As a surprise my boyfriend had craftily booked us into an Executive Club room, which is one up from the Club room. It's a little larger with a separate seating area and basically has more space to wrap yourself in the faux fur bed cover and swan about.

If you want to know the way to my heart, booking a larger room as it turns out is one of them. Cue more oooing and ahhing.

Our first port of call was the rooftop bar, Club Brass. Firstly because we couldn't believe our luck that the sun was out after days of rain and secondly, cocktails!

I went for the Gin based Bellboy Barry Bramble and couldn't have been happier taking in the view and spending time with my man "Bruce."

There were so many extra little touches that made our stay so good and set the hotel apart from others. Take the message from Bellboy Barry in my cocktail for example, who "dreams of a promotion to concierge, when he isn't travelling the world, drinking cocktails and looking for a nice young lady to settle down with."

Club Brass is open to hotel guests and club members only, adding a little touch of exclusivity. Member applications are put before a membership committee after which those successful join a waiting list. Oh and there's the small matter of a membership fee. For a lifetime membership it's a mere snip at £5,000! Or you could always opt for a yearly membership at £100 registration plus £500 a year. What do you think? Should I put you down for a lifetime yeah??

By chance an old friend of ours was in Manchester for the afternoon, so we tore ourselves away from the rooftop views before we had too many Bellboy Barry Brambles and started requesting member application packs, and headed instead into the city to meet our friend.

When we arrived back at the hotel later that evening, the curtains in our room had been drawn and classical music was quietly playing to set the ambience for the night ahead. How absolutely wonderful is that?

If you want to know another way to my heart, drawing the curtains for me in an evening as it turns out is also one of them.

We shared a bottle of red over a delightful dinner in the Honey Restaurant and chatted as the sun set over Gotham. Sorry sorry, no as the sun set over Manchester. How dreamy is that view?

Our one night escape to Hotel Gotham was so much fun and the nicest escape. Don't make me go back to reality pleeeease!

  4. Manchester is a city like no other: leading the way in music, arts and entertainments. Cosmopolitan, edgy, and happening: spend any time in Manchester and you'll soon see it's a place like no other. The city has long-transformed itself from industrial heavyweight to a commercial and exciting city centre. With dozens of galleries and museums plus terrific shops and restaurants, may people would say it's the north's finest city. This free-spirited, dynamic city demands your attention and will win your heart with a warm welcome and a liberating open-mindedness. tidy-up.co.uk
